Destination info

Cambodia lies on the Indo-Chinese peninsula. It is bordered by Thailand, Laos and Vietnam.

Still recovering from its turbulent past when nearly two million civilians died during the Khmer Rouge regime led by Pol Pot, Cambodia is a very deprived, yet fascinating destination that offers mesmerising sights to explore as well as a diverse culture and an affable civilisation.

Phnom Penh is as exotic as it sounds. The Royal Palace and the Mekong  River means Phnom Penh is one of Asia’s undiscovered gems. Phnom Penh is a vibrant, busy city with motorbikes whizzing around and scents waft around from the market stalls. It is not just another modern Asian capital; it is a more traditional place that travellers flock to.

  • Location: Phnom Penh

As part of this volunteer programme we work with two projects in Cambodia, a library and community project. You will be allocated on arrival to one or the other depending on the needs of the two projects at the time.

Community project
This is a small community project in Phnom Penh that works directly with families who are at risk of child trafficking. Through education, medical care, social support and community work, their children are given an alternative life.

The project is situated in a slum area close to the Tonle Sap river. The children are aged from 5 years of age to 20 years old. There are two classrooms, one holds children from 8 to 13 years of age. The other classroom ch has children from 14 to 17 years of age, this class studies through conversation.

Library project
A large proportion of the people in Phnom Penh city that live under the poverty line. This has lead to many children begging on the streets, scrap collectors or cart pullers which means that they do not have the time or money to be able to go to school and get a vital education; something that would truly help their families in the long run.

In 2009 an organisation decided to set up a library in the poor area to provide informal education to the children and provide English classes. The project also provides reading books for the children that can’t afford them. There are approximately more than 100 children attending the library and are aged between 7 and 18 years of age. There are now 3 classrooms for teaching English.

As a volunteer you will provide the children with essential attention, support, care and the vital education they need. You'll be given the special opportunity to act as a role model to the children; encouraging them to develop an enthusiasm for education and helping them develop their skills.

Teaching will be the main focus of your role. Volunteer activities include:

  • Arranging lesson plans
  • Teaching English lessons
  • Teaching drawing and painting
  • Helping with health education
  • Taking care of children during class

The working hours at the project will be Monday to Friday 9am-11am and 1pm-3pm, leaving your weekends free to explore the area. Transport to and from the shelter will be by tuktuk, which is one of the best ways to get around Cambodian cities.

Please note: Itineraries and activities are subject to change.

Cambodia has only recently started to recover from a civil war that affected the whole country, when the Khmer Rouge specifically targeted the educated people in the communities. The country however has proved to be strong and is slowly moving forward and aspiring to be accepted as part of the developing world. It is doing so by providing a decent education to everyone, so that Cambodia can compete with its neighbouring countries for trade and tourism. The Paris agreement of 1993 has allowed the people of Cambodia to have the opportunity to vote for the leader of their country, meaning they could move from a country of Communism into Democracy.

The effects of these tragic events can still be felt by some. Many people lost family members, children were left wither without parents or with parents that could not support them and became orphans. Cambodia’s need for volunteers is to provide assistance with the children of Cambodia, particularly their need for an education. The projects that we work with are privately funded however they do not have sufficuient funds to finance the number of teachers and carers that are needed for the number of children at the project. That is where you come in! By volunteering at these projects you will be in a position to improve the education of the students and provide them with a role model and coach.

How would you rate your overall experience?
(10/10)
Please rate the worthwhileness of any volunteering in your trip if applicable.
(10/10)
What were the highlights of your trip?

Meeting the children and visiting their homes; although it was tough to see it really helped me to understand why what we were doing was so important.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

Don't worry if you haven't taught before, the full time teachers there are really helpful and you fall into the job almost immediately. Don't be afraid to talk to other travellers, the people I met were amazing and made my trip even more amazing. I would really recommend weekend trips away ie. to Siem Reap or the beach.

Would you travel with our company again?

Yes

Would you recommend us?

What were the highlights of your trip?

The children at the orphanage were amazing and Cambodia itself is a lovely country with really friendly people. I got on well with other volunteers there too which made the trip much more enjoyable.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

If you can, prepare some games and teaching ideas before you go. Try and see as many of the projects as possible while you are there. Go to the Killing Fields and S21 museum, very sad but definitely needs to be seen.

What were the highlights of your trip?

The children at the orphanage were fantastic. I had so much fun teaching them, chatting to them and having fun with them. Didn't want to leave!

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

1) Remember if you are teaching beginners that it might seem like you aren't helping as they make pretty slow progress, but just them hearing your voice will be helping them learn english! 2) Try to learn a little bit of Khmer to help you with the children when they don't speak much English and remember you can always ask someone to translate more complicated instructions for you. 3) Make the most of the fantastic experience and try not to be too sad when you have to leave!! :)

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

Try to bring some money for donations, because they need lots of things and you will feel you would like to have raised some money with your friends help. Try to know exactly where you are going to work and what you will be doing in great detail.

What were the highlights of your trip?

The children were the obvious highlight of the trip, however there were things i wasnt expecting as well. The accomodation was very good, and the people so friendly, going out to dinner with the tuk tuk drivers was hilarious! Its also very easy to get out to other areas of Cambodia like Siem Reap on weekends, and the in country coordinator is very good at helping with trips like these. I would recommend this trip to anyone, but be aware that you much of the work is teaching and not care, so be adequately prepared to teach. The TEFL is very useful.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

Wear insect repellent at all times, even when you think you wont need it! Throw yourself into everything, meeting new people, trying to foods, it all counts towards the whole experience. Dont be afraid of doing things by yourself, stay safe, but locals really know their stuff and can often help you.

What were the highlights of your trip?

Sharing four weeks with the children was the most wonderful part of my trip. They are the most funny, clever and welcoming people I have met!!! I also enjoyed exploring the Country on my weekends, meeting the other volunteers and learning about Cambodia and the culture first hand. No matter how much you know about a Country and its history and culture, nothing can compare to being their and experiencing it for yourself.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

Have a few ideas, topics and games already prepared for your first lesson. Be prepared to work hard. Take extra money to buy some school supplies whilst you're there, such as board markers and stickers.

What were the highlights of your trip?

Everything was brilliant really. The teaching was challenging but it was so rewarding to see some of the children really improving with time. The accommodation was centrally located in a not-so-touristy area which meant that real Cambodia was experienced...a little scary at first but very rewarding once you realise you can do something and live somewhere like this, alone. Also great to meet fellow volunteers, and visit other parts of Cambodia.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

- Be prepared to be teaching 99% of the time - we never had the opportunity to farm and had limited time playing with the kids...there was very much a focus on the teaching, which was what I signed up for but it's not clearly stated in the description how much the focus is on teaching. - Be confident, both with your class and your fellow volunteers. - Try to absorb yourself in the culture, although a little daunting at first, the Cambodian approach to life is strangely refreshing!

Getting to know the kids, teaching and playing with them. So rewarding!

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?

Volunteer for as long as you can, I chose to do 4 weeks because I had never done any thing like this before and wasn't sure I'd cope with longer, but by the end of the 2nd week it was clear that to make a real difference to the kids I'd need much longer!
