Volunteer Role: 4 - 12 weeks

Destination info

Zimbabwe borders Zambia, South Africa, Botswana and Mozambique. It is a diverse and exhilarating destination with some of the most beautiful and well-protected game reserves in the world. These privately run reserves are on a mission to protect the bio-diversity and wildlife that Zimbabwe is home to.

There are over 10 large National Parks and numerous private reserves across Zimbabwe.  Your time in Zimbabwe will be vital to the protection and conservation of many endangered animals and their surrounding environment, which is conducive to their survival.

This project is based on a private farm, approximately 105 km from Harare, set in stunning rolling bushveld landscapes offering a unique experience and that is not to be missed!
  • Location: 105km east of Harare

Your time at this project will be divided into spending time with the elephants and working with the rhinos. There will also be an opportunity to work at a small school within the local community close to the project during the school term, or at a pre school during the school holidays.

The Rhino Project
You will play an important role in rehabilitating these endangered animals back into their natural environment. It will be an experience of a lifetime and a chance to make a massive contribution to helping save this ancient animal from extinction.

Your duties may include:
  • Learning to handle the rhinos
  • Cleaning out pens and bringing the animals in for the evening
  • Walking  with the rhinos and spending quality time with these wonderful animals in order to collect valuable data on their behaviour and ecology
  • Interacting with the baby rhinos providing the contact and security they need during this important time in their lives

Your work with the Elephants

You will love your time with these magnificent animals…it is a privilege to work closely with them and their handlers. Working with qualified elephant handlers, the ranch offers you endless opportunities to learn about and interact with these amazing animals.

Your duties may include:

  • Pen cleaning and feeding
  • Chores such as wood collection, ploughing and farm work using the elephants
  • Elephant patrols and snare sweeps
  • Observing the elephants in their natural habitat and spending valuable time in their company, whilst gathering research and data
  • Elephant back safaris and camping out in the bush

Additional Information & FAQs

Minimum age

Minimum 18 years, maximum decided on potential participants’ health.

Accommodation

The accommodation on this project is fantastic! You will be staying in a comfortable double storied farmhouse, which is situated at the centre of the ranch and on the edge of a dam. Often Elephants, Rhinos and Hippos will come to browse in the garden, which is a stunning sight.

You will be staying in a shared bedroom (either double or four people sharing) with shared bathrooms. Hot water and electricity is available but power cuts are quite normal, so remember to bring a torch! The house has a large dining room, two communal sitting rooms with fireplaces in each and a kitchen. In the evenings volunteers can meet in the sitting room to relax and talk about the day’s events.

Meals

Three substantial meals and basic house keeping duties will be provided for you each day.  You will be required to help with keeping the house clean and tidy, maintaining the garden and the vegetable garden. You may even eat down by the stunning water’s edge, sharing your lunch with the elephants that can often enjoy your company at the river!

Is this trip for you?

You must be in a good physical condition, as you will be expected to walk long distances and participate in physical activities.

Project Orientation

On arrival you will have a briefing as to the rules of safety of the safari ranch. Your orientation will also include:

  • Introduction to all camp staff including managers, guides, researchers, and assistants
  • Familiarisation with the Safari camp and the conservancy, including the boundaries, internal roads and tracks and some of the wildlife species of the area in which you will be working
  • Introduction to current research procedures
  • Further information about the rhino protection programme
  • Familiarisation with all other duties you will be involved in
  • You will be working with the indigenous population of Zimbabwe, so you will also be given a short briefing on local culture and etiquette etc.

Advice & Safety

Throughout your programmes you will have the support and guidance of the programme co-ordinator and team. You will be provided with competent assistance and help with any questions or advice you may need during your stay.

You will be assigned a personal travel advisor who will co-ordinate your programme with you. Feel free to contact them at any time before you go, or when you are on your travels.

In addition, you will have access to a 24 hour emergency contact number so you can contact one of our UK staff at any time should you need to.

What were the highlights of your trip?

volunteering on the ranch was amazing and while there were some things not so enjoyable (game count!) the fact that you get to handle the animals - elephants and rhinos in particular and get to really know them and the handlers is a rare opoortunity. Although now in Nepal I really miss Imire and the camaradarie created by the family run ranch and a few of us are planning to go back next year! Loved it!!
