Trip Summary

Become a teaching volunteer in Ghana and make a real difference in the lives of young people. Jet over to the bustling city of Accra and help out in a choice of local schools, supporting teachers and delivering lessons.  Many schools in Ghana are hugely underfunded and understaffed, meaning that lesson content can be limited and repetitive. As a teaching volunteer you can bring some creative flair and inspiration, and deliver lessons that are fun, exciting and interactive for the friendly school children of Accra. Plus, during your time off from the project you can relax on the beach or explore more of Ghana. The best of both worlds!

What to expect at the project

When you arrive in Ghana, you will have a fantastic orientation to really help you get settled in to your new surroundings and get to grips with how things work in Ghana. You’ll receive an orientation briefing covering lots of useful information relating to your programme and Ghana in general. In addition, you’ll also be taken on a tour of Accra including visits to the craft markets, shops, bars, banks and of course the lovely local beach!

You will then be placed in one of a number of local schools near Ghana’s capital Accra. You’ll have the choice of being placed at either the Junior or Senior High School, depending on which age group you feel most comfortable teaching.

You’ll be tasked with creating and delivering classes that are inspiring, fun, exciting and interactive with the aim to improve the levels of literacy, numeracy and communication of the students in your classes. Your main focus will be on the core subjects of English, Maths, Science and Social Studies; but the project is flexible so if you can opt to focus on just on one particular subject that you are interested in and feel most comfortable with.

As with all volunteer projects, we ask the you remain as open-minded and flexible to all opportunities that arise as this will really help you to get the most out of your volunteer programme.

Transport

Transport between your accommodation and chosen project each day is not included in the programme, so you will need to make your own way to and fro. During the first few days of your programme, a member of our in-country team will accompany you to show you how to use the local transport system and ensure that you are happy and comfortable doing so before you start making the journey on your own.

Day in the life

You will typically be volunteering from Monday to Friday for between 6 and 8 hours each day (please note these hours can vary). During your free time, you will need to make sure that you set aside some time for lesson planning and preparation to ensure that your lessons are confident and well-structured.

Class sizes at the schools do vary, but are usually between 20 and 30 students, sometimes more. The schools that you will be placed in do follow a set curriculum, similar to your home country, which you will need to incorporate and follow in your lessons and planning. As part of your induction to the programme and your project work, the Ghanaian curriculum will be explained to you so that you are aware of the lesson content that you will need to cover.

You’ll receive plenty of help and assistance with tasks such as lesson planning, discipline in the classroom and cultural courtesies, from a number of sources including our in-country team, the local teachers at your school, as well as other volunteers. You will be placed alongside one of the local teachers until you have learnt the ropes and are comfortable leading the class and taking control. Once you have mastered this, you can choose to either take the classes on your own or with a fellow volunteer if you prefer. Although this may seem daunting you will no doubt have an amazing sense of achievement when your time on this volunteer programme comes to an end.

In addition to your main placement, you will have the opportunity to teach classes, or assist in teaching classes with our football school based in Teshie- Accra. With a western education, you will be able to contribute massively to the standard of tuition that the students receive. Subject areas include English (language and literature), math, science, journalism, business, IT, RE and a whole variety of extra-curricular activities.

You can also get involved with coaching your favourite sport in the afternoon helping disadvantage children reach their full potential in Sports, Education and Health using sports as a tool to achieve that.

Please note: During August schools are closed for the holiday period, which means normal lessons do not run, however there is a summer school program, which you will help on. If you are volunteering during this month you will be helping out on the recess program which runs throughout August and will also give volunteers a chance to teach.

Purpose and aim of the programme and how do you benefit the programme

Teachers in Ghana are often overworked and under-resourced; as such they are unable to introduce fun and exciting exercises or extra-curricular activities for the students to become involved in. As a volunteer in one of the local schools, you will focused on teaching core subjects but creating lessons that are fun and interactive and introducing some new activities to really help enrich the education that the children receive during your time at the school.

Achievements

By volunteering on this programme, you will provide much needed assistance to teachers in schools in Ghana. You will introduce creativity and energy to the classroom and give the children support and new-found confidence. As a fluent English speaker, you can also help out with English lessons for the children, giving them an extremely valuable skill for life as well giving them a huge confidence boost!

As well as getting the satisfaction of making a difference in the lives of young people, you’ll also gain great teaching and childcare experience in a unique setting. This’ll help prepare you for future teaching and childcare roles, and certainly make your CV stand out from the crowd!
